Inspiration

Shortly after new year's I read a post on facebook that one of my friends wrote about how her sister had completed a half marathon after almost dying the year before. In a comment to her post one of my closest friends in college wrote that she had trained and completed her first half marathon a couple of years ago... wasn't sure she could do it, but when she did she says she realized she could so anything that she tried to do. She says she it is one of the few things in life she is truly proud of. I can think of a few things that might make that list (a PhD being one), but I am truly amazed by this accomplishment. Especially since she and I enjoyed a no run philosophy while in college, well unless we were making an ice cream run, that is.

So I got to thinking, if these amazing women can run a half marathon maybe I can. So I started talking about it with my husband about it and to my shock despite some snarky jokes about my disdain for running he was actually pretty supportive of my idea. So as we talked I thought to myself, I want to be able to achieve this goal. Given the fact that I am overweight and live a fairly sedentary lifestyle I started to think being able to run 13.1 miles by the end of the year might not be possible. Cue my husband who said, "well if your goal is to run a total of 13 miles in the year you can do if you run up and down the driveway a couple of times a day everyday until the end of the year." Before anyone asks, no, we do not have an extraordinarily long driveway. That was just my husband being an ass. What I decided was possible was running 3.1 miles. I figure I can go from being a total non-runner to being able to run 3.1 miles straight in 365 days. According to the websites I found when I googled "train for a 5K", I can supposedly train to do this in 8 weeks, assuming I can already 1.5 miles. Considering I can't do this, I will be working up to the 1.5 miles and then start the 8 week process.

God help me...5K here I come.
